Basic Rain Gutter Information

Here are few, of the many different installation methods and lingo that may be used on your install.

There are two main types of gutters: sectional and seamless. Sectional gutters, while less expensive, require more maintenance over time due to the need for seams that can leak. Seamless gutters are custom-made on-site with a dedicated gutter machine that forms the gutter out of a single sheet of metal; this makes them more efficient and longer-lasting than sectional gutters. Regardless of your choice, having gutters installed is essential to protecting your home from water damage caused by rainwater runoff.

When it comes to determining the size and type of seamless rain gutters and downspouts needed for your home or business, there are various factors to consider. The size of your roof, the amount of rainfall in your area, and your budget all play a role. For smaller roofs, 5 inch seamless rain gutters with 2x3 inch downspouts are usually sufficient. However, for larger roofs or areas with heavy rainfall, 6 inch gutters with 3x4 inch downspouts may be necessary to properly direct water away from your property. Additionally, consider the material of the gutters and downspouts, as different materials have different strengths and durability. Consult with a professional gutter installer who can assess your specific needs and recommend the best seamless rain gutters and downspouts for your property.

5 inch seamless rain gutters can be equipped with 3x4 inch down spouts, but for maximum water drainage choose a 6 inch seamless rain gutter with 3x4 down spouts.

One 2x3 downspout for every 600 square ft. of roofing area.

One 3x4 downspout for every 1200 square ft. of roofing area.

Example: If your roof is 40 ft. long and 16 ft. to the peak. 40 x 16 = 640 square ft. area

Requires (2) 2x3 downspouts or (1) 3x4 downspout

6" Seamless Rain Gutters may be required to accommodate steep pitch roofs, slate roofs, tile roofs, commercial buildings and other areas depending on the gutter install. 6" gutter should always be equipped with 3x4 downspouts

Basic Rain Gutter Terminology

  • Rain Gutter Miter

Rain Gutter Miter

Hand Cut Corner. This creates a strong and durable joint that is less likely to leak or separate over time. The Box and Strip miters involve pre-made pieces that are attached to the ends of the gutters. While these may be quicker and easier to install, they are not as strong or long-lasting as a Hand Cut miter. It is important to choose a gutter company that uses Hand Cut miters to ensure the highest quality and longevity of your gutter system.

Box Miter Gutter Installation

A box miter is a quick and easy way to join two gutter sections at a corner, but it is not the best option for long-term durability and maintenance. To ensure the best results for your gutter installation, it is recommended to consult with a professional who can offer alternative solutions to box miters.

  • Box Miter Gutter

  • Strip Miter Rain Gutter

Strip Miter Rain Gutter

It is a technique where a small strip of material is used to join two pieces of gutter at an angle, creating a mitered corner. While it is a quick and easy solution, it can be prone to leaks and may not be as aesthetically pleasing as a Hand Cut corner. Experienced contractors and homeowners typically opt for Hand Cut corners, which are custom-cut on-site corners where they are folded and sealed. These are considered to be more durable and have a more polished look, but may require a higher upfront investment.
